It was Ethiopia’s Amane Gobena taking a solid win at the 2016 Bolder Boulder International Team Challenge held on Memorial Day. 27 women made up 9 teams of elite runners from around the world competing for prize money and bragging rights. A hallmark of the race since 1998, teams of 3 athletes are invited to represent their country for country pride and one of the largest non-marathon prize purse in the country. Teams are scored cross-country style with points awarded on the basis of finishing place.
The elite women lined up first at the new start line on Folsom Street as crowds of spectators lined the streets. From the gun American Lindsey Scherf led out the pack afraid to get her heels clipped from the tight start. After the grouped seemed to get into the rhythm, it was Ethiopia’s Amane Gobena who would start to pull. The pack stayed together through the first 3 miles until Gobena threw in a surge covering the next mile in 5:20, putting between 5 and 15 seconds on the field. Her next mile she ran in 5:15 and added another 15 seconds over Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui of Kenya and Miyuki Uehara of Japan cementing her lead. Eventually Miyuki would over take Chepkoech Kipkirui up Folsom to take second behind Gobena.
The race for Team USA was close as the third runner for Ethiopia was struggling after 5k. Lindsey Sheri reacted to passing her.
That was a boost for me. In the last 5k I went by a Japanese runner and the Ethiopian and I knew we were duking it out with those two teams for top position. So once I went by, I knew I had to hold on to the positions I earned.
Team USA Red took 4th place led by 8th place finisher Alishia Williams, indcluded Tara Welling (10th) and Lindsey Scherf (11th). Team USA White was made up of Brianne Nelson (13th), Adrianna Nelson (14th) and Rochelle Kanuho (16th). Team USA Blue was Alia Gray (18th), Sara Slattery (24th) and Brittni Hutton (25th).
