Trio of Buffs Head To NCAA Indoor Track Championships
BOULDER — The University of Colorado track and field team will send three seniors to compete at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 8 and 9, in Fayetteville, Ark.
Emma Coburn (mile) is the only female attending the championship, while Joe Morris (60-meters) and Aric Van Halen (3,000-meters) will represent the men’s team.
Coburn enters the meet with the top mile time in the country at 4:29.86, which she ran to earn a fourth-place finish (and was the top collegiate athlete) at the prestigious Millrose Games in February. The time put her fifth on the all-time NCAA performer’s list and is the sixth fastest time ever run by a collegiate racer. Coburn is the only athlete in the field to have a time under 4:30. Florida’s Cory McGee is the next closest with a time of 4:32.01. The semifinals will be at 4:30 p.m. MT on Friday and the finals are set for 5 p.m. MT on Saturday.
Morris enters the meet ranks sixth in the 60; his time of 6.61 was converted from a time of 6.57 which he ran at the Air Force Academy to start the season. Morris’ mark of 6.61 is tied with two other runners, Auburn’s Marcus Rowland and Tulsa’s Bryce Robinson. Florida State has the top two times this season. Marvic Bracy has clocked 6.54 and Dentarius Locke is second with 6.56. Missouri’s Markesh Woodson is third overall with a time of 6.60. The semis are on Friday at 6:05 p.m. MT and the finals will be contested at 6:10 p.m. MT on Saturday.
Van Halen ranks 16th overall in the 3,000 heading into the meet. Earlier this season he raced 7:53.74 which put him third on CU’s all-time performers list and propelled him ahead of some of three-time Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein (8:01.18), Jorge Torres (8:02.75) and two-time Olympian Alan Culpepper (8:04.67). Torres competed at one Olympic Games. Lawi Lalang has the top time in the country at 7:42.79. The finals in the 3k will be on Saturday at 6:55 p.m.
