Achieving Whole Body Balance

When it comes to treating the whole body, Boulder has no shortage of massage therapists, acupuncture specialists and rolfers. With more than 60 massage listings in the phone book and more than 70 listings for acupuncture, it would seem the market is saturated. But it's not, at least according to Jon Fox, the director of Whole Body Balance.

Fox's business used to be located in Louisville, but he recently moved to Boulder where he could be closer to his clients. "Boulder is more of a healing community," says Fox, "there's more access to athletes." Athletes make up half his business.

Most of his clients come in for therapeutic or deep tissue, massage – the most common hands-on healing in Boulder. But Whole Body Balance offers more than just massage. It provides acupuncture, rolfing and low-level laser therapy. "I wanted to offer a lot of treatments in one location," says Fox of his wellness center.

Fox employs five massage therapists, one acupuncturist who was certified in California, four rolfers and two low-level laser therapists.

"We do a lot of rolfing. About 30% of what we do is rolfing," explains Fox. The concept behind rolfing is to work on the connective tissue that holds the muscles together to help alleviate pain. "Rolfing tends to help with body alignment. In the case of runners, once they are better aligned and they have a better gait, they can run with even strikes on the ground."

Fox is a certified rolfer and has been practicing for two years. The most common rolfing treatment is the ten series, which takes place over many weeks.

Low-level laser therapy, also called "cold laser" therapy, is used to treat acute pain. Research on its effectiveness is currently being conducted in Europe and Japan. Fox says his practitioners use laser treatment on people who have arthritis, tendonitis, migraine headaches, carpal tunnel pain and other chronic problems that are not helped by conventional western medicine.

The beauty of creating a wellness center, says Fox, is that each of the practitioners who work at Whole Body Balance can refer to each other to provide complete, centralized service to their clients.
