EUGENE, Ore. – University of Colorado assistant coach Billy Nelson won the 2011 USA Steeplechase title on Saturday afternoon at the USATF Outdoor Championship at Hayward Field.
Nelson won the meet with a time of 8 minutes, 28.46 seconds and finished just ahead of Reebok’s Daniel Huling who crossed the finish in 8:29.27. With the win Nelson, a 2008 Olympian in the steeplechase, earned a spot on the U.S. team that will compete at the IAAF World Championships, August 27-September 4, in Daegu, Korea.
Jenny Simpson also earned a spot on the U.S. team competing in Korea after finishing second in the 1,500. She finished the race in 4:05.66 behind adidas runner Morgan Uceny (4:03.91).
CU volunteer assistant coach and former Buff Jeremy Dodson advanced to the semifinals of the 200-meter dash after taking second in the fourth heat. Dodson finished in 20.34 behind Shawn Crawford (20.24), who had the fastest time of the day. The semifinals are Sunday at 12:10 p.m. (PT) with the finals following at 2:52 p.m. (PT).
Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp will also compete in the finals of the steeplechase at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday.
