Boulder to Boston – Great finishes from local athletes

Boston Marathon decorated pancakes hot off the griddle, along fresh brewed Ozo coffee helped feed the energy of over 40 running fans who gathered in the early morning hours to cheer on friends who were running in the 2016 Boston Marathon at the Marathon Watch Party hosted by Flatirons Running and the Boulder Running Journal. The live stream of the race was on the TV, mile splits of the leaders and friends were shared or shouted out as the race progressed. The fans were an eclectic mix of everyday runners, aspiring professional runners and Boulder’s elite including Benji Durden who was 3rd in the 1983 Boston Marathon with his best time of 2:09:57, and 1984 Boston Marathon winner Lorraine Moller was even there to partake in the fun.

The crowd cheered as Superior’s Neely Spence Gracey took over center screen pulling the lead pack for a mile or so in the early miles. In her highly anticipated marathon debut, Neely ran a smart overall race finishing as the first American and 9th overall with a time of 2:35:00.

On the Men’s side, Zack Hine a former Boulder resident took top honors as the first American, right behind him was Colorado Springs’ Ian Burrell and to the delight of the crowd, Boulder Track Club’s Clint Wells was the 3rd American and top master in the race running 2:24:55.

Well’s on the experience: “Turning the corner on Boylston Street and seeing the 1,000s of spectators and the finish line had to be the best part!!”

One particular runner we had our eye on was Boulder Running Journal editor Terzah Becker. In her unique story she was looking to qualify for Boston by the time she reached 40. She managed to do just that, but was denied an entry as the age group filled with faster runners. So she qualified again with the new tighter standard. Again the demand for entries was so high that she missed the registration window by a mere 8 seconds. Through the luck of a facebook contest put on by Clif Bar, she won one of 5 spots granted back to runners who qualified but were not able to get in.

“For two years I had to tell my kids that I qualified and then explain to them later why I can’t run it. It’s a good feeling to be able to tell them that because I didn’t quit and didn’t give up I was able to fulfill my dream — it’s nice to be able to show them even a nerdy girl can one day grow up to achieve all her athletic dreams.

“Just never, ever give up.”

More of her story is told by Mike Sandrock for the Daily Camera. Terzah ran a strong even race and even clocked a new Personal Best.

Even Ryan Van Duzer was part of the sideline action as he and Clif Bar headed to Heartbreak hill to cheer on runners. #NoHeartbreakHere
