Boulder Road Runners Poised to Repeat USATF Grand Prix Champs
Gold medal team from the Oct. 29 USATF Masters 15K National Championship in Tulsa, OK. L-R: Mark Donelson, Kyle Hubbart, Bruce Kirschner, Dan Spale.
After 8 of 9 races in the 2016 USATF Grand Prix Series, the Boulder Road Runners 60+ Men’s team is tied with Cal Coast Track Club of Southern California. BRR is the defending champions in the division after their win in 2015. That victory wasn’t decided until the last race of the series at the National Club Cross-Country Championship in San Francisco last December. Once it again it will come down to the final race to determine the winner of the division this year with both teams currently tied at 480 points.
The teams have faced each four times during the year, each coming away with 2 victories against each other between February and November and both teams have earned 3 national titles at varying distances during the year. Cal Coast won the 8K Cross Country, 8K Road and Half-Marathon Championships while BRR earned titles at 5K, 10K, and 15K on the roads.
The final event in the series takes place on December 10 in Tallahassee, FL at the USATF National Club Cross-Country Nationals at Apalachee Regional Park. The 2015 event saw more than 30 teams contest the 60+ division with Cal Coast finishing one place ahead of BRR. The Boulder contingent is intent on reversing that order on December 10 to reclaim their title as the number one team in the nation in their age group.
