University of Colorado distance runner Emma Coburn, who on Saturday ended her collegiate running career with her second NCAA steeplechase title, has signed a professional contract with shoe company New Balance.
“I am thrilled to join Team New Balance as I start my professional career,” she said. “New Balance has a long-standing history as an excellent running company, and I am honored to become a part of it.”
The arrangement sets up a power training partnership between her and fellow New Balance athlete Jenny Simpson, a former CU teammate and steeplechaserwho recently returned to Boulder to be coached again by Wetmore and Burroughs, in addition to teammate Shalaya Kipp, who won the steeplechase NCAA title in 2012 and is redshirting this year.
Steeplechase “has given me the most success over the years, so that’s going to be my main focus,” she said of her career going forward. “I’ll sprinkle in some 1500s … and maybe some 5,000s down the line.
