Perhaps there was no better place to launch the highly anticipated release of the Clayton from Hoka One One than the Boulder Running Company last Monday night, March 14. As it was really under the wing of Co-founder Johnny Halberstadt and the BRC that helped the brand gain a foothold in the U.S.. Johnny first met Hoka Co-Founder Jean-Luc Diard at The Running Event and immediately recognized the potential of the shoe. They were also the first store in the country to carry the entire line of Hokas. Boulder is also home to its earliest adopters and most ardent fans, starting with ultra runner Dave Mackey, Darcy Piceu and recently Sage Canaday who has been one of their most visible brand ambassadors on the trails.
Hoka invited a few in the media to come learn about the new shoe, take them out for a test run, while given the chance to mingle with local Hoka One One athletes and hear more about the shoe straight from Co-Founder Jean-Luc Diard and Chris Hillyer, the Senior Manager of Innovation. Local trail runners and triathletes were Sage Canaday, Darcy Piceu (Africa), Dave Scott, Drew Scott, Lauren Goss, and Danielle Mack.
When I was handed a box of the new Hoka One One Clayton I wasn’t even sure there was a pair inside the box was so light. The Mens’ size 9 weighs in at a mere 7.2 ounces but provides enough protection and support through a dual-density foam they call Pro2Lite. The toe box was roomy and felt like a very light slipper when on and provided a nice wide contact to the ground with its traditionally wider outsole.
Jonathan Beverly at Runner’s World found “the Clayton promises to provide the same level of cushioning, at least in the heel as its other models. The slightly firmer forefoot has more flex than we’ve experienced before in a Hoka, while still being sharply upturned at the toe to provide the pronounced “rocker” effect the brand is known for.” – full review »
“We are always looking for ways to make you run faster. Whether you are going 100 miles, or you are injured and you are going as fast as you can. But one thing the Clayton really represents is we can speak to different people with these fundamental stories.”
– Senior Manager of Innovation, Chris Hillyer
The Hoka One One Clayton is now available in 2 colors for both men and women at the Boulder Running Company, and should be available at other retailers later this month.
Make sure you get into the store and try a pair and see how it transforms your running.
