The US Olympic Marathon trials will be held in Los Angeles on Saturday February 13th. The top 3 finishers in each race will make the team for the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro. The women’s marathon will be on Sunday August 14 and the men’s marathon will be the last running event of the games just before the Awards Ceremony on Sunday, August 21st.

New Olympic Marathon Standards

The standards for the U.S. were just modified and lowered in December to comply with an IAAF decision to allow more people to compete in the 2016 games, which meant that five more people from Colorado now qualified (2 men and 3 women in Colorado). Louisville’s Ben Zywicki was one of those qualifiers and posted about his excitement on his Facebook page.

35 seconds. Less than 1.4 seconds/mile separated me from the US Olympic Marathon Trials, until today. Yesterday the IAAF updated the Olympic Marathon qualifying time from 2:17 to 2:19. USATF followed suit today, granting me a qualifying spot at the USOT Marathon in LA on February 13 with my 2:18:35 I ran at the Anthem Richmond Marathon just over a year ago.

Wow. What a surreal moment. I’ve made nearly a dozen attempts over the past two years but failed every time. I would have preferred to hit the standard as it was set, but I am incredibly grateful for the change and appreciative of the new opportunity afforded to me. It brings me great joy knowing that I can represent my family and friends at a national championship race, who provide me with such a positive and loving environment for me to live, love, and train in.

The A standard for men is 2:15:00 and the new B standard that gets you to the line of the trials is 2:19:00. Men can also qualify by running faster than 1:05 in the half-marathon. For the women, its 2:37 and now 2:45 for the A and B standard or they can run a 1:15 half-marathon time. Runners must run a qualifying time between August 1, 2013 to January 17, 2016.

Colorado had the most qualifiers out of any state with a total of 56. *(4 more were added after the last qualifying weekend 1/17) The next state with the most contingents was California with 51.*(this number does not reflect the final number)
Editor’s note: Originally it was reported that CO had 55, but Zack Hines, Jeremy Freed and Jason Hartman have been removed from the list as they now live in other states.
