Despite the snow a few weeks back and the cold spell we just endured, many front range trails are in fairly great shape for running.
Today I ran up the Mesa Trail from Chautauqua Park to the north fork of Shanahan Ridge, down to Cragmoor, north through the neighborhoods to connect with the Bear Canyon Trail, below NCAR to connect with Skunk, Kohler and Enchanted Mesa then back to Chautauqua.
As expected, the trail was dry and a bit rutty in the exposed east and south facing sections and either somewhat wet with minor mud or snow packed in shaded areas. There were a few longer hard packed snow sections up Bear Canyon Trail that connects the Mesa trail section, but there was enough exposed rock or dirt so that I wasn’t slipping and didn’t need spikes or shoe screws. I would imagine that climbs up some singletrack and shaded areas leading higher to the peaks could be more icy.
